It's said that in his twilight years
Saint Peter's eyes would fill with tears
As, rife with longing, he would sigh
Desiderio Domini!
When asked by others to confess
The reason for his deep distress
Saint Peter only gave reply
Desiderio Domini!
For every time a cockerel crowed
His eyes, like fountains, overflowed
And wails of sorrow split the sky
Desiderio Domini!
Yet even in the hour of death
When Peter breathed his final breath
He whispered as he hung to die
Desiderio Domini!
Now let us souls who still remain
Take up Saint Peter's bold refrain
And echo back the martyr's cry
Desiderio Domini!
